Library Resources Help [HPSC]

This guide contains resources that have been created to help users familiarise themselves, or refresh their knowledge of, the University of Derby's Library resources. Some of the material is general, some is specific to the College of Health, Psychology &

At the University of Derby in the College of Health, Psychology, & Social Care--if you're creating your references yourself--we generally use  either the Harvard referencing style as set out in Cite Them Right (Online). This resource is available 24/7 and is a subscription based resource so you will need to be logged in to UDo to access the content. Or, if you are studying on a Psychology programme, you are likely to use either the APA system of referencing, OR a programme supplied system, so do check your programme materials before you start.

NB: if you log into UDo and then open a new tab and Google Cite Them Right it's unlikely to pick up that you're logged in to the University system and therefore won't show you any content.

To access Cite Them Right (Online) click on the link below.

How can we help?

There are a number of videos and PowerPoint files available for you to watch / use in your own time to familiarise yourself with some of our online resources. (See the Videos tab for more information). They will range from general introductions, to intermediate and up to advanced / expert to suit different stages of your student journey. (This guide is a work in progress and more material will be added over time.)

Before making an appointment with your Academic Librarian, please have a look at the help resources to see if they will answer your question. If you still have questions after you've looked at the videos then you can either attend one of the drop-in sessions set up at different sites (see the box below), or you can make an individual appointment.

Can't find the help guide you want or need? Fill out this quick form to request a guide.

If you're not sure where to start with your searching and you're a new student, then you may find it useful to begin with the material under the Videos / Files tabs for beginners.

The Library has a programme of workshops, drop-ins and clinics that runs throughout the academic year, called Enhance Your Learning. These workshops cover topics such as: library research, citing and referencing, maths skills, exam revision, report writing, presentation skills, note taking, using Google more effectively, and more!

Some of these sessions and workshops are delivered by members of the Skills Team, some are delivered by the Academic Librarians.

You can take a look at the Enhance Your Learning calendar here to see details of upcoming events. Some events are free to just drop-in, others may require booking.

We have a Skills team who can help with a range of academic skills, from planning and structuring essays, to revision and note-taking skills, interpreting feedback and citing and referencing. They also run drop-ins and workshops both face to face and online. (You may need to register for the workshops.)

To book a Skills appointment, or to see what workshops and drop-ins are available and coming up, have a look at our Library Events Calendar

We do try and avoid using too much library jargon when we answer you, but sometimes it still slips out! If you're not sure what we mean, please ask.

Alternatively, there is a helpful library glossary explaining frequently used words available here.

If your fellow students are being a bit noisy, you can report this to our Security team.

You can email us at or call 01332 591215.
