There are a number of videos and PowerPoint files available for you to watch / use in your own time to familiarise yourself with some of our online resources. (See the Videos tab for more information). They will range from general introductions, to intermediate and up to advanced / expert to suit different stages of your student journey. (This guide is a work in progress and more material will be added over time.)
Before making an appointment with your Academic Librarian, please have a look at the help resources to see if they will answer your question. If you still have questions after you've looked at the videos then you can either attend one of the drop-in session, or you can make an individual appointment.
If you're not sure where to start with your searching and you're a new student, then you may find it useful to begin with the material under the Videos / Files tabs for beginners.
If you need help with using the library, doing research, or citing and referencing, you can make a personal appointment with the Academic Librarian assigned to your programme, Hazel Glasse.
Before making an appointment, have a look at the help videos and printable guides to see if they answer your question(s); if you haven't managed to get what you need from the help material then you can either come to one of the drop-ins set up for CLANS students or you can see if there's an appointment slot free that matches up with your schedule.
Appointments can be in-person, over the telephone (if you are based in the UK), or online via Blackboard Collaborate. You can choose your preference when booking.
You can make an appointment with Hazel by clicking here.
The Library has a programme of workshops, drop-ins and clinics that runs throughout the academic year, called Enhance Your Learning. These workshops cover topics such as: library research, citing and referencing, maths skills, exam revision, report writing, presentation skills, note taking, using Google more effectively, and more!
Some of these sessions and workshops are delivered by members of the Skills Team, some are delivered by the Academic Librarians.
You can take a look at the Enhance Your Learning calendar here to see details of upcoming events. Some events are free to just drop-in, others may require booking.
We have a Skills team who can help with a range of academic skills, from planning and structuring essays, to revision and note-taking skills, interpreting feedback and citing and referencing. They also run drop-ins and workshops both face to face and online. (You may need to register for the workshops.)
To book a Skills appointment, or to see what workshops and drop-ins are available and coming up, have a look at our Library Events Calendar
We do try and avoid using too much library jargon when we answer you, but sometimes it still slips out! If you're not sure what we mean, please ask.
Alternatively, there is a helpful library glossary explaining frequently used words available here.
If your fellow students are being a bit noisy, you can report this to our Security team.
You can email us at email@example.com or call 01332 591215.
