Doing legal research

Legal research online

Westlaw is one of the most important legal databases used here at the University of Derby. You can use it to find law reports, legislation, journal articles and eBooks.

It may help to have Westlaw open in a separate tab whilst you watch these videos, so you can see for yourself the tips demonstrated. There is a link for Westlaw below. If you are not already signed into UDO, you may be prompted to do this.

If when you log in to Westlaw, you see a pop-up box asking you to sign in to your Westlaw UK Profile just click Skip.

These videos will give you an introduction to using Westlaw for legal research. Watch these videos and then try Westlaw for yourself!

HeinOnline is a database you will find yourself using mainly to source information about American and international law. It does contain the English Law Reports - however, these are also available via Westlaw, which should be your first stop when looking for case law.

HeinOnline has a very large Law Journal Library, which contains thousands of journals on American and international law. The vast majority of law journals on Westlaw and Lexis are UK-focused, so if you are researching non-UK law HeinOnline is the best place to start.
