Beginner: Skills expected to be developed by someone new to, or returning to University level study after a break in education.
As you enter university you may already be equipped with many Information Literacy skills without realising.
At the beginner level you should be developing skills which will help you to:
- Understand the question to be answered or the assignment to be addressed.
- Be aware of and able to use tools such as mind-mapping or digital 'sticky notes' to describe and visualise your topic. This may help you understand the scope of the information you need. For example, the type of information, how much information you need, and where to focus your research etc.
- Understand that information may be available in print, digital or media formats and understand the differences between them.
- Be aware of the range of resources available and the advantages and disadvantages of each type.
- Understand the difference between print and online information sources and know how to access online (digital) information on and off campus.
- Become familiar with the range of support guides available and where to find them. For example, know when and how to use the Develop@Derby guides.
