Intermediate: By the Intermediate level you are developing higher level skills. For example, you may be expected to demonstrate some or all of these by the end of the second year of an undergraduate programme.

The Intermediate level builds on the Information Literacy skills you have already developed, increasing your confidence to engage with independent academic study and research.

In particular you will be developing the ability to:

  • Access and use the information you find through your research in an ethical and legal way.  This means being aware of and understanding terms of use such as Copyright.

  • Understand that online content may have different terms of use to print materials.  These may include things like Creative Commons licences, materials in the public domain or available through Open Access.

  • Log in to your account on Library Search and understand the benefits of saving resources or your search strategy to manage your research process.

  • Set up a personal account (where this option is available) on relevant subject databases to save resources or search strategies.

  • Use techniques such as exporting records into reference management tools to save and manage your research results effectively.  The University supports Endnote which you can download from Blackboard.
  • Manage your academic skills and competencies development over time by recording your self directed skills development activities.  For example log and reflect on workshops attended, or Develop@Derby resources used.
