Intermediate: By the Intermediate level you are developing higher level skills. For example, you may be expected to demonstrate some or all of these by the end of the second year of an undergraduate programme.
The Intermediate level builds on the Information Literacy skills already developed, increasing your confidence to engage with independent academic study and research.
In particular you will be developing the ability to:
- Analyse and understand more complex questions to be answered for assignments. Consider the scope of your information needs; how broad or narrow is your subject focus?
- Identify your own research topic or question for independent pieces of work. As above, consider the scope of your information need.
- Develop a research plan with an extended or advanced search strategy.
- Identify a list of appropriate keywords, phrases, synonyms and related terms. Remember differences in terminology and spellings used across multiple sources of information.
- Undertake background research to inform the search strategy. This may also determine the focus of your research and identify gaps in the research/literature and deepen your knowledge about a topic.
- Identify a range of appropriate sources to search both within and beyond the Library.
- Use Develop@Derby resources to support your skills when prompted; for example, following academic feedback.
