The Novice level builds on the skills learnt at the Beginner level.
By the end of the Novice level you should be able to:
- Understand how to apply evaluation criteria to assess the quality of the information you find.
- Evaluate information using a range of tools. In addition to the 5W's mention at Beginner level you should be aware of the RADAR and CRAAP models. See PDFs below for more information.
- Identify conflicting perspectives, potential bias or 'fake news'. You can find out more about spotting fake news from the PDF linked at the bottom of this page.
- Use your evaluation skills to select relevant quality sources to support your arguments in your assignments.
- Understand how to evaluate your search strategy or search process and make changes to improve the results found.
- Understand the limitations of relying solely on Google or Wikipedia for the purposes of academic study.
- Seek out opportunities to develop your own skills by attending relevant workshops and responding to academic feedback.
