Question

Advanced:  These are more advanced skills expected to be developed by the end of the third year of an undergraduate programme, for example.

At the Advanced level you are demonstrating your confidence with a growing range of Information Literacy skills.  You are building on a strong foundation of skills developed over your first and second years of study and preparing to face the challenges of your final year of your degree with it's emphasis on independent studies, reports and possibly your dissertation.

In particular you will be able to:

  • Apply critical evaluation skills to assess reliability, validity, authority, bias etc. of the information you have found.  You should be comparing information from a range of resources.

  • Use quality criteria to screen search results focussing on the most relevant information or data within documents.  This may include skim reading the articles or abstracts.

  • Justify your choice of information sources based on the evaluation criteria you have applied.

  • Reflect on your research process to assess whether you have met your information need.  Redefine or revisit your search strategy if necessary to locate relevant and appropriate resources.

  • Participate in regular skills development activities including using Develop@Derby guides, workshops and self directed learning through further reading.
