Advanced:  These are more advanced skills expected to be developed by the end of the third year of an undergraduate programme, for example.

At the Advanced level you are demonstrating your confidence with a growing range of Information Literacy skills.  You are building on a strong foundation of skills developed over your first and second years of study and preparing to face the challenges of your final year of your degree with it's emphasis on independent studies, reports and possibly your dissertation.

These more advanced pieces of work require additional organisational skills to manage your research effectively, save time and reduce stress.

In addition to the skills already mentioned in the previous levels you will be developing the ability to:

  • Interpret search results from Library Search OR individual subject databases recognising where full text is already available or where you may need to use additional services such as Inter Library Loans.

  • Use functionality within Library Search and other databases to sort, save records, organise results by creating and using folders or tags and export records for use with reference management software.

  • Use reference management software to manage and organize relevant search results; for example using techniques available to remove duplicate records.

  • Understand the benefits of using reference management software to generate citations, reference lists and bibliographies in the required referencing style.

  • Set up search alerts on specific databases or for specific journals to keep up to date with new research in your area of interest.

  • Continue to engage in and reflect on your ongoing skills development particularly that which is self-led.
