Getting the most out of Develop@Derby

When to use Develop@Derby 

While Develop@Derby is designed to be flexible, so you can focus on the skills that matter most to you, when it suits you best, we understand that some areas become more relevant at different points in the academic year. To help you make the most of your time, we've put together a short guide highlighting what you might find most useful and when. 

Start of the Year 

  • Bookmark Develop@Derby and take time to explore the full Skill Set and resources available. 

  • Log into your free LinkedIn Learning and SAGE Student Success accounts, offering thousands of courses to help you build your academic, digital, and professional skills. Make sure to bookmark them for quick access! 

  • Join early online learning lunches (workshops) to build good habits around academic skills such as academic writing, independent learning, and literature searching.  

  • Register for and attend in person sessions and activities available across our campuses such as Learning Lunches, Skills Boosters and Skills Labs to build confidence and develop areas within our Develop@Derby Skill Set.

During Semesters 

  • Attend our live online workshops on academic writing, critical thinking, and academic reading. We also cover how to use key academic tools, such as EndNote. 

  • Identify areas for development within our Develop@Derby Skill Set and attend in person activities available across our campuses such as Learning Lunches, Skills Boosters and Skills Labs.  

  • Explore LinkedIn Learning for guidance on using software like Microsoft Office. As a University of Derby student, you have free access to  a range of Microsoft applications with your university login.  

  • Try a course from SAGE Student Success to help you develop skills such as presentation skills, critical reading, research techniques, note-taking, referencing, and managing academic stress.

Towards Deadlines 

  • Focus your attention on managing pressure and staying organised as assignment and exam deadlines approach. 

  • Join our online workshops that cover topics like time management, exam revision strategies, and referencing. 

  • Try courses from SAGE Student Success to help you prepare for assessments by strengthening skills such as time management, revision techniques, exam strategies, managing academic pressure, critical thinking, and proofreading.

Over the Summer 

  • Use the quieter months to reflect on the year and focus on personal and professional development. 

  • Build new skills with LinkedIn Learning that will help boost your CV and prepare you for placements or graduate roles. Example skills to search for are leadership, digital marketing, guidance on software such as Microsoft Office, creative problem solving, and teamwork. Add your completed courses to your LinkedIn profile and download your certificates. 

  • Set new goals for the upcoming year, create study plans, and build strategies for a successful return in September.
