The University has a Responsible Metrics Statement, based on the recommendations of the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics, which is a guide to responsible research assessment using metrics. More information can be found on the Responsible Use of Metrics Intranet site.
The Leiden Manifesto consists of 10 principles to guide the use of research metrics and the measurement of research performance. The first and arguably most important principle is that quantitative metrics should be used to support, and not replace qualitative assessments. Watch the view below for an overview of all 10 key mandates!
In March 2022 the University signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) an objective of the University’s Innovation Research Strategy 2020 – 2026. The principles of DORA align with the University’s policies on Publication and Open Access and Research Data Management. Some key recommendations of DORA include avoiding the over-use of Journal metrics, like the Journal Impact Factor, as well as promoting open data and metric practices.
The Metric Tide is an independent review of the role of metrics in research assessment and management. It acknowledges the potential for research metrics to foster an open research community if used responsibly, but also their ability to present a skewed picture if not.
