Finding and Evaluating Sources Activity
Time 30-60 mins
Brief:
Find a source (book/newspaper/magazine) your school library or local library that interests you. Read a chapter of the source and use the CRAAP Test and the 5 W's from the Evaluating information pages, to evaluate the accuracy of the what you are reading. Make notes of your answer for each test and of anything interesting from your reading, you'll need this for later.
Having read the source, use either your library or the internet to find a second source of information that covers the same topic as your first source. Use the index and/or the contents list of the source to find any pages that may be relevant to the first source. Read these pages and compare the two sources together. Are they in agreement? Do they have different explanations or reasoning? Which of the two sources do you think is more reliable. If you are unsure, consider finding and reading a third source on the area. Note down your which source is more reliable and why you think this.
