Open Access Books

Research Funders: Open Access Policies

Many funders now require Open Access (OA) to long form output types arising from their funding, including UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and all constituent councils (monographs, book chapters and edited collections, within 12 months from publication), Wellcome Trust (scholarly monographs and book chapters, within 6 months from publication) and Horizon Europe, see section 17 (immediate OA).

Your funder may pay OA book publishing costs, so it is always best practice to check what your obligations are from the outset of your project. See the Funder Policies page on the Open Access LibGuide for further guidance.

If you are funded by UK Research and Innovation, there is a £ 3.5 million ring fenced fund to support the new requirement for long form output types to be made OA under their policy from the 1st January 2024. If you require support with ensuring compliance with this policy and wish to discuss your options, please contact Holly Limbert, Repository and Open Access Librarian in the first instance.

The Researcher Development team in the University Research and Knowledge Exchange office can provide help on research funding applications. Their details can be found on the University Research and Knowledge Exchange (URKEO) SharePoint Pages.
