Arguments need evidence to back them up. To let the person reading your work know the origin of your evidence, you need to tell them. You do this by using citations and references. Citations appear in the body of your work, and references appear in a reference list at the end of your work. This process is usually called 'referencing,' and you need to 'reference' to avoid unintentional plagiarism and to get the best marks you can—you will be marked according to the quality of your referencing.
