From the 24th to the 30th of October, the university will be taking part in the worldwide celebration of International Open Access week. This year, the theme is ‘Open for Climate Justice’.

The climate crisis has never been more urgent and affects us all! Embracing Open encourages the sharing and dissemination of knowledge in this area between communities in an equitable and transparent way. Open Access is just one of the ways in which we, as a community can help to contribute towards climate justice. Further information on the theme can be found on the Open Access week website along with a full list of events which are happening across the globe!

Join us at Derby as we celebrate the week in the following ways:

A weekly countdown to OA week – a feature in Derby Daily every Wednesday.

Emma Butler, our Research Liaison Manager and Holly Limbert our Repository and Open Access Librarian will both be featuring in '5 minutes with' in Derby Daily, discussing the work the library Research Liaison Team are undertaking around supporting research at the university and towards creating an Open Research culture.

Holly Limbert and Caroline Ball have co-written a blog on the benefits of Open Access and Open Research and why this matters which has been published on the university website

On Wednesday the 26th October from 2-3 pm Holly Limbert will be chairing an event which the library is hosting on the Plan S Rights Retention Strategy (RRS), 'Why the Rights Retention Strategy Matters'. We will be joined by two Open Access experts Sally Rumsey and Johan Rooryck from cOAlition S. Come along to this webinar to find out how using this simple but effective strategy ensures that you can retain the rights to the work that you created whilst being compliant with funder requirements around Open Access. Full details of the session can be found here along with the link to register. So far, we have 110 individuals signed up from across the UK, Europe and the USA. It would be fantastic to see you there so please come along!

The university Open Research SharePoint pages have been created in collaboration with the Head of Research Governance, Professor Paul Lynch and will be launched during OA week: keep an eye on the URKEO intranet pages to explore these pages and see how the university is invested in Open Research. Our Research Liaison Manager, Emma, will also be talking through why this is important for Derby in her Proud and Excited piece, highlighting this work.

We will also be active on social media throughout the week sharing quotes from the fantastic researchers at Derby who are invested in research around the area of climate justice and the importance of making this as Open as possible.

Join us in the global celebration of Open Access and the promotion of an accessible, transparent and fair research environment!
