If you can, before doing the exercises, split into groups and do the exercises as a group.
You can pick more than one exercise to do but you only have to feed back to the larger group as a whole on one of them.
Group 1 :: search Library Plus looking for information on topic 1
Group 2 :: search Library Plus looking for information on topic 2
Group 3 :: search Google Scholar looking for information on topic 1
Group 4 :: search Google Scholar looking for information on topic 2
The key here is to practice the planning and searching strands of research and then share them with the group for comment and feedback. Don't worry about getting it 'wrong' - everyone has their own techniques for searching, everyone has their own vocabulary of terms that they search for first - the more you plan and search the more developed your expertise will be, and the more you can improve your results.
Each group will have a maximum of 10 minutes to report back on their searches.
There will be time at the end for questions and/or a refresher on searching if it's asked for.
Using the advanced search screen in Library Plus do a search for recent full-text articles relating to the topic of either:
If you're a nursing student: | If you're a radiography student: | |
---|---|---|
Handwashing: alcohol-free or alcohol-based hand gels for best results? | Radiography as a detection tool for osteoporosis | |
OR | OR | |
Foot care for elderly diabetic patients: common problems. | The use of mammography in male patients with breast disease | |
OR | ||
The use of multi-slice CT in bowel cancer screening | ||
OR | ||
Radiographer led discharge in the emergency department |
You must:
Plan out your search, listing your chosen search terms and any limits you want to apply and prepare a rationale for why you've made those choices
Perform your search in Library Plus using the advanced search screen and making sure you don't just use AND as a search method
Use the sidebar to narrow your results down - try to get below 100
Reflect on:
Then, at the eResources session where we meet up again, each group will show the rest of the cohort what they selected, how they searched for their terms, and discuss the results they found while getting constructive feedback back from the group and myself.
