Web of Science is one of the oldest citation databases and is owned and maintained by Clarivate Analytics. The Web of Science Core Collection contains over 95 million records, including more than 157,000 books and 22 000 journals (Web of Science Coverage Details, 2025).

As of April 2025, Scopus indexes over 25 000 journals, plus 10.5 million conference papers and over 750 000 preprints (What Content is Indexed in Scopus, 2025).
Dimensions is a linked research data infrastructure and tool that indexes over 98 million publications and 150 million patents (Dimensions Data, n.d.). There is a free version available which lets you search for publications and export metadata, but registration is required.
OpenAlex is a free, open source, database which indexes over 200 million works. Created in 2022 and named after the Library of Alexandria, its mission is to "create a universal collection of scholarship" (About OpenAlex, n.d.).
