Introduction to the Library: Academic Staff

Supporting your teaching

How we can support your teaching.

Academic Librarians and the Research Liaison team  work closely with academic staff to design and deliver information literacy teaching and support.  We can also help you develop Library collections for programmes and subject areas to enhance student learning.

This includes:

  • Teaching information literacy skills, both within the curriculum and through our Develop@Derby online workshops.

  • Supporting students, via 1-1 appointments, the live chat enquiry service and asynchronous materials via our online Develop@Derby workshops, produced and delivered by the Research team, the Academic Librarians team and the Skills team.

  • Asynchronous Skills resources available through our guides and YouTube channel

  • Identifying the best information resources to support teaching and learning. We support reading list development, helping you to adhere to quality and policy standards, and locate resources which are relevant, current and support the University Learning and Teaching Strategy and Attainment Policy.

  • Providing professional advice and guidance on Library resources and services for academic quality purposes.  This might include supporting programme approval events, curriculum reviews and subject development, collaborative partnership reviews and improvement of the student experience.

Have a look at the other tabs on this page for more information.

The Academic Librarian team has an excellent in-curriculum offer, delivering teaching, training and specialist support to students, helping to develop students use of information and resources in their work and in using subject specialist search techniques and resources.

You can find out more about our current offer from the document below, or contact your Academic Librarian to discuss how we can help you.

Develop@Derby is the University skills support service, consisting of online guides that students and staff can use asynchronously and live online workshops that can be accessed via our calendar of events.  Develop@Derby includes support and guidance from a range of professional teams across the University; from Careers, Wellbeing and Digital Services and Solutions as well as from the Library teams. Take a look at the Develop@Derby Hub, which is the main access point to our skills resources, to get a feel for the range of support offered.

The Library delivers a suite of online workshops as part of the Develop@Derby offer covering  information literacy, research and academic skills.  These include instructional workshops outlining how to use library systems and tools to discover resources plus workshops that cover how to develop effective search strategies and techniques, evaluation skills and critical and ethical use of information, academic writing skills, time management and motivation etc.  The workshops are designed and delivered by the Academic librarians, and the Skills team.

Additional workshops are offered by the Research Liaison team, often for academic staff and early career researchers.

You can find full information about all of these from the workshop menu guide.

Once you are more familiar with the Develop@Derby resources, you may want to think about ways you can embed the materials into your teaching and signpost students to this support.

The Skills team have also produced an extensive suite of videos, podcasts and interviews, all available on their YouTube channel.

Skills for Study

Students also have full access to the online Skills for Study package from Bloomsbury.   Many of the modules on the platform are linked to from within the individual Develop@Derby guides.  It's a fantastic skills resource and well worth promoting to your students at all levels of study.  You can access it from the Databases button on the Library homepage; you will need to register the first time you use it, but just use your usual staff email address to set up the account.
