Some external funding organisations, such as the signatories of Plan S, have a condition in place that requires grant holders to publish their output immediately Open Access (OA) whilst retaining the rights to their Work. Plan S introduced their Rights Retention Strategy in 2018, to enable authors to publish in the subscription journal of their choice whilst retaining copyright to the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) of their work, achieving immediate OA via the deposit of their AAM into an OA repository, such as UDORA.
The university's position on Rights Retention (RR) ensures that you can automatically comply with all funder requirements on OA. The policy comes into effect from the 1st October 2024.
That said, it is best practice to check funders’ OA requirements at the start of your research project. You can find information about funder policies via SHERPA Services which is the authoritative resource for understanding funder requirements along with other information relating to OA.
The Researcher Development team in the University Innovation and Research Office can provide help on research funding applications. Their details can be found on the Innovation and Research SharePoint Pages.
Below are some examples of funders who have adopted a RR position in their OA policy
