Research Publication, Open Access and Rights Retention Policy

Why do we need to notify publishers?

Publishers have been notified to provide them with the full knowledge that a prior licence to an Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) already exists with the University of Derby. Therefore when a publisher accepts an article for publication from a University of Derby author, this is done in the full knowledge that a prior licence takes precedence over any subsequent publishing contract such as a Copyright Transfer Agreement or Exclusive Licence to Publish. This enables the AAM to be deposited into UDORA, the University of Derby's institutional repository, under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence from the first day of publication without breaking copyright law. Publishers have been notified as a matter of courtesy of the revisions to the University’s Publication and Open Access Policy meaning that University of Derby authors, will automatically grant a licence to the University to disseminate the AAM arising from their submission under a CC BY licence, from 1st October 2024,

The list of publishers to be notified was compiled using the University of Derby institutional repository, UDORA. The overview report detailing all outputs deposited in the repository was used and limited to the last five years of outputs and to specific output types to exclude those not in scope of the policy. The list of publishers was reviewed by the Library Research and Publication Practice Team, the Head of Research Governance, the Theme leads and the Chairs of College Research Committees. For completeness, the list was also compared with lists provided by Jisc (Joint Information Systems Committee), the Society for College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) and publishers on the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) Journal Ranking Lists.
