Beginner: Skills expected to be developed by someone new to, or returning to University level study after a break in education.
At the Beginner level you will starting your academic journey and will be responding to some of your first assignments.
At this stage you should be developing skills that enable you to:
- Understand how to present information in an appropriate style for the assignment; for example for a poster, presentation or essay. Use the Develop@Derby guides for support with academic writing and to understand the different types of assignment you may be asked to present.
- Use a selection of media and digital tools relevant to the assignment; for example Word, Powerpoint, Excel.
- Understand what copyright is and how to avoid plagiarism.
- Include supporting information and evidence from a selection of sources within your written work.
- Understand that references can be created in different styles and become familiar with the one you are asked to use for your academic work.
- Know how to apply the referencing style to cite sources correctly. Be aware of and use Cite them Right.
- Know how to create a reference list (or bibliography) for each piece of work using the appropriate referencing style.
- Know how to use Turnitin to submit work as required.
