Applying a CC licence or CC0 to your work

Read the various CC licences carefully because you are giving permission for anyone to use your material for the duration of the copyright. Remember once chosen a CC licence and CC0 is legally valid and may not be revoked. Choose which licence best suits your goals or aims, check Creative Commons wiki for Considerations for licensors.

  • Make sure you own the rights before applying a CC licence or CC0 public domain dedication tool.
  • CC licences cannot be applied to works in the Public Domain.
  • Mark your work to inform others which CC licence you have chosen.
  • For online content use the step-by-step licence chooser, which will advise you of the best CC licence for your purpose and generate an HTML code for your website.
  • For offline content mark your work with a statement such as "This work is made available under the Creative Commons [insert description] licence. Visit [insert url] to see a copy of the licence.
