Copyright Guide

This guide will help you to find out how copyright affects your study, research and work here at the University of Derby. Please note that information on these pages is for guidance only: it should not be construed as formal legal advice.

Embargo Periods

Typically, a publisher will require an embargo period of anywhere between 12 to 24 months from the date of first online publication. This is the case when publishing via the subscription route and then archiving a copy of the manuscript- either the preprint or the post print into an institutional repository. This is known as the Green route to achieve Open Access.

Even when an embargo has been imposed by a publisher, publications still need to be submitted to UDORA. A citation for the item can be created within UDORA but access to the full text can be restricted until the date of the embargo has passed. You can select an embargo date when uploading your material to UDORA. If you fail to do this and subsequently wish an embargo to be put in place, please contact Publication Practice Librarian, Holly Limbert.
