Copyright Guide

This guide will help you to find out how copyright affects your study, research and work here at the University of Derby. Please note that information on these pages is for guidance only: it should not be construed as formal legal advice.

Music Licences

The University holds two licences which allow for public performances of music and the broadcast of music on University premises. The PRS licence covers the use of the lyrics and composed music, on behalf of the lyricists, composers and music publishers; the PPL licence covers the recorded music on behalf of the record companies and performers.

If you would like to perform or broadcast music for non-educational purposes, for entertainment or background music, the licences are limited to certain specific named locations.

You may play or broadcast music anywhere on the University premises as long as it is for educational purposes and the music is not audible to members of the public.
