Generative AI Guidance (Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot)

Referencing Generative AI

If you choose to use text or images generated by AI within your work then you will need to acknowledge the original source to avoid committing plagiarism (Academic Regulations J2.1(iii)). This includes if you amend any work material created by AI.

The referencing database Cite Them Right contains information on how to reference use of AI within your work. This guidance is currently available in Harvard,  APA 7th, OSCOLA, MLA 9th, Chicago, Vancouver, IEEE and MHRA referencing styles. You can access Cite Them Right online for free using your student details.

The Articles on Generative AI can be found from the Cite Them Right Homepage by clicking the "choose your referencing style" box.

From there select your referencing style from the 8 available. For most students this will be Harvard, however Psychology students use APA 7th and Law students use OSCOLA.

Once you have selected your referencing style, scroll down to "Digital and Internet" and select "software" and then "Generative AI".

This will then allow you to see how to reference generative AI materials. If possible, provide a copy of the transcript of the AI work as an appendix to your assignment.

If you need further support in referencing and using Cite Them Right please see our referencing guide and attend one of our referencing workshops.
