Creative Problem Solving Guide

Creative Problem Solving is a process for finding solutions to problems where conventional approaches have failed. By harnessing your imagination, you can develop innovative solutions that help you to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals

How to improve your Mental Agility

For many careers within engineering, science and IT, diagrammatic reasoning tests (also known as logical reasoning tests) are used as pre-employment assessments to gain further insight of an interviewee’s problem-solving abilities and mental agility skills. It is a useful mental agility test to be aware of and to practice upon too, as whilst you may find that diagrammatic reasoning tests may not be used in your field of study, practicing these tests can be useful in understanding and developing your mental agility.

Diagrammatic reasoning tests assess your ability to break down complex problems, analyse visual diagrams, consider different perspectives and to make logical conclusions.

Example of a Diagrammatic Reasoning Test

Here is an example of a logic reasoning test:

Series of five boxes, each with a diagonal line and a circle intersected by a bar, with one missing box. Four answer choices labelled A, B, C, D.

To solve this test, you must find; using logical reasoning, what the ‘?’ box in the sequence should be from the four boxes below labelled A, B, C and D.

The correct answer is

A black circle and a line inside a square turn clo

Reason:
The pattern involves two moving parts, the long line from the square's corners and the short line within the circle. Both lines are moving in a clockwise direction (to the left) with each turn. It can then be assumed that the long line must be coming from the top left corner of the square, and the short line must be vertical within the circle.
