CopyrightUser.org has created an excellent guide that looks at the copyright exceptions libraries are able to use. Please see copyrightuser.org Exceptions for Libraries for more information
During the course of your studies or non-commercial research you might need an article or book that is not in our Library stock. If eligible the process for requesting an inter library loan is swift and simple - please read our guide on Inter Library Loans for more information.
Libraries are governed by copyright law when they copy and supply a requested work and there are key factors that must be complied with.
The copy requested must only be for non-commercial research or private study and there can be no financial gain emerging from the use of the supplied copy. The copy supplied must only be for the personal use of the requester and further copies cannot be distributed to any other people such as friends or colleagues, they must request it for themselves.
You can only make copies, photocopied or scanned, from books/journals that the Library owns or copyright-cleared versions of the same supplied via the Digitisation Team.
Each time you submit a request you will be required to fill out a copyright declaration form agreeing to abide by the terms and conditions of use. If you are found at a later stage to have broken those conditions, you will be personally held liable.
To comply with UK copyright law, the Library can only supply you with one chapter per book or one article per journal issue. If you require more than one item from the same publication, you should request a loan of the full item.
I hereby request you to supply me with a copy of the item detailed on this form which I require for the purposes of research or private study. I declare that:
Commercial research should be understood as any research that is directly or indirectly income-generating. Your purpose at the time must be unambiguously non-commercial if you intend to fill out the Inter Library Loan form and not pay a copyright fee.
