Equality
Equality Act 2010
Equality means the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities.
The Equality Act 2010 was established to provide legal protection against discrimination and defines protections for the following characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
Discrimination on the grounds of any of these characteristics is illegal.
Related to Equality, is Equity. Equity is the quality of being fair and just, especially in a way that takes account of and seeks to address existing inequalities, to ensure that everyone is given the opportunity to succeed.
