Independent Study

Introduction to the Independent Study

The Independent Study module at Level 6 is designed to enable you to explore a personally chosen field of study and to demonstrate a range of skills developed in the course to date. You are required to identify an aspect of practice in education, the nature of the education system, or its role in contemporary society, which you will study and research in considerable detail.

These endeavours will provide a distinctive and unique aspect to your degree qualifications and will represent a field of knowledge and understanding which may be developed further in postgraduate training, practice or research.

The Educational Independent Study presents opportunities for autonomy in the choice of focus and conduct of the ensuing study and enquiry, which are supported, but not directed by tutorial staff. You will be assigned a tutor who will work with you to develop a study that is ethically sound and manageable and who will help you to gain a deeper understanding of the research process. Your completed Independent Study should include:

  • A title
  • An introduction and rationale for the study chapter
  • A Literature Review chapter
  • A Research Methodology chapter
  • A Data Findings chapter
  • A Data Analysis chapter
  • A Conclusions chapter
  • Reference list
  • Appendices
