Information Literacy: Support for Academics

Subject Guides

The library provides a wide range of academic resources both in print and electronic formats, across multiple discipline areas. Many will be completely new and unfamiliar for users; some may only be required at certain points in a student’s academic career, others may be key subject resources used throughout their studies.

To help users navigate their way through the maze of campus-based and online resources, Library teams have created a range of online guides which are outlined here. All these guides can be accessed from the drop-down menu beneath Support on the top of the library home page, as seen in this image.

You can find the subject guides here too https://libguides.derby.ac.uk/subjectguides

Subject guides are written by Academic Librarians and are arranged by broad subject headings aligned to the Colleges and Schools within the University. There may be just one or several guides for each broad subject.

The guides are designed to help build and develop awareness and skills to get the most from library resources. In general, the guides provide:

  • information and contact details for the Academic librarian,

  • advice on finding and using eBooks and journal articles,

  • highlight and provide links to the key subject databases and online resources for the subject

  • links to the Develop@Derby guides

  • links to advice on Referencing

Many of the pages within the guides include help in the form of short videos or printable documents
