ERA licence

The university holds an ERA Licence and subscribes to BoB ((Box of Broadcasts). This enables members of the institution to login to record and watch broadcasts from a number of channels such as BBC, ITV, Ch4, E4, Ch5. It's also possible to make clips and show the transcript - enabling accessibility. BoB is only available to view in the United Kingdom.

It does not include pay-per-view or satellite channels. Additionally, third-party advertisements are not included within the ERA licence, as the various ERA members/participants do not own or control the rights to these.

Under the terms of this licence you are permitted to show programmes in lectures, tutorials etc and create clips or extracts to embed in presentations or PowerPoints, as long as the content is used as broadcast. You cannot edit or adapt the content in any way, e.g. add a different soundtrack or voiceover, use post-production effects or use the clips in creating a new video.

The ERA licence also covers the BBC iPlayer, Channel 4's All 4, ITV Hub and Channel 5's My 5 videos on demand services. You can now directly stream these videos for display in lectures and link the videos within Blackboard. It must be for non-commercial, educational purposes under the terms of the ERA Licence. Most of the videos available through these services however have a time limit, often 30 days, beyond which they are unavailable.
