Can I put a copy of an electronic journal article or eBook chapter on Blackboard?

You must check the terms of the licence of the database or site you are sourcing the article or eBook from. Most are limited to searching, reading and printing journal articles for personal use, teaching, learning and research. Some do permit the re-uploading of content to VLE, but it is important to check the terms of the licence for this resource. Contact the Copyright Advisor for advice on whether the terms of the licence for the database in question permit this.

The best practice is to create a static links to the webpage or database hosting the journal article or eBook: remember to link to the summary or abstract page and not directly to the PDF itself, as this is considered 'deep-linking' and can also involve bandwidth-theft if the file is particularly large.

The Content & Discovery Team will not make digital copies of something already available in digital format. We recommend that you link students to the material in question rather than uploading it for them.

You may add static links to the webpage or database hosting the journal article or eBook: remember to link to the summary or abstract page and not directly to the PDF itself, as this is considered 'deep-linking' and can also involve bandwidth-theft if the file is particularly large.

It is considered best practice to link to the A-Z of electronic journals rather than a specific site, as this gives students the option of a number of different hosts to choose from. This avoids situations where a journal may only be hosted on one database and that database is inaccessible because of technical issues, for example.
