The University does hold a subscription to Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection, a database containing current and historical Ordnance Survey maps and British Geoogical Survey maps. The data within this database is licensed for teaching, educational or academic research.
However, Ordnance Survey data from Digimap cannot be shared amonst students for class exercises unless all students are registered with Digimap. This applies even if a lecturer or member of staff has downloaded and prepared the material for distribution within class. Students wishing to use OS data from Digimap for group projects must ensure all members of the group are registered with Digimap.
Print copies of maps may be used for class work without all students needing to register with Digimap.
The datasets and maps from Digimap cannot be used for administration, estate management, university promotion or marketing, commercial gain or commercial research, or recreational use.
Copyright duration for maps is for 50 years from the date of publication. Any historical maps, therefore, would be free to use under copyright law. Maps created or published within the last 50 years would require permission of the copyright holder and most likely a fee to pay.
Maps are excluded from the CLA licence. Under the terms of fair dealing, you are only permitted to take one A4 sized copy of a portion of a map for private research or study. You cannot make multiple copies or use it as a handout or include it in a PowerPoint.
