Staff Copyright Guide

Unpublished work

An institutional repository does not necessarily have to solely contain copies of already published material. It is designed to be an archive of all research output generated by the University, both published and unpublished.

Some material is not necessarily suited for publication in a traditional journal but may still have research or academic merit. Many institutions include material such as conference reports, statistical data, sound and video files, course notes and administrative documents in their repositories.

Making material freely available on the web counts as publishing, and it is therefore a violation of copyright to do this without prior permission from the copyright holder. It is therefore important that you check your work for third-party copyrighted material and either remove or seek permission for use before uploading to UDORA. The Senior Copyright Officer (Donya Rowan) can give you further advice and assistance regarding this.

All material intended for open acess must undergo some form of critical review process - this might be by a fellow member of the department, for example. This is to ensure that all material available for access under the University of Derby adheres to the same high level of quality.
