Leadership and Future Thinking at University

How you can use future thinking

We can use future thinking in a variety of ways to give us some foresight and plan accordingly. It can be used to identify problems or opportunities that may arise and allow us to mitigate or exploit them. Future thinking can be used in the development of:

  • Products

  • Services

  • Businesses

  • Policies

  • Career development

  • Team leadership

Any area where some form of insight into what could happen, and to help steer actions can benefit from some form of future thinking.

At university, future thinking is a useful tool that can be used to help you plan or spot problems and opportunities in your studies and careers. You can use it to:

  • Identify cutting-edge topics to study for assignments

  • Identify possible future careers

  • Map potential outcomes of actions

  • Help with planning assignments/semesters
